How "UPPER's take" works
This is our own take, not customer reviews. We score 1 to 5 hearts on five things: how good it is for under-3s, shade, seating, restrooms, and how easy it is with a stroller. We only rate places where we could check those facts. Public ratings and parent quotes are shown word for word, with a link to where we read them.

Things to watch out for
- Metro with a stroller: only folded strollers are allowed on escalators. If your child is in the stroller, use the elevator, and check elevator status before you go. WMATA rules
- Bathrooms: many DC rec center restrooms aren't always open to the public. A local mom keeps a travel potty in the car for this reason.
- Zoo passes: even babies need one. Same-day passes are limited.
- Short fall days: the zoo closes at 4 PM from fall on. Go early, and bring a layer for the walk home.
