The first few outings with your baby? Let’s be honest: pure chaos.

You think you need everything. Diapers, wipes, 3 outfits, a backup for the backup… and next thing you know, your bag weighs more than your baby.

We’ve been there. So we talked to real parents, dug through our own messy experiences, and made a list of the 10 things every new parent keeps repacking—but maybe doesn’t need to.

And what you do.

What You Keep Repacking (but rarely need):

1. Four changes of clothes
You probably won’t need more than one backup onesie. Keep the extras in the car.

2. Every pacifier in the house
Pick your baby’s favorite. Two is plenty. One always ends up on the floor.

3. Thermometer, nasal aspirator, baby nail clippers
Important at home, not at the park.

4. Entire diaper stash
Two to three diapers are usually enough for a short outing.

5. Every toy they own
One or two sensory toys or a soft book is more than enough.

6. Your full makeup bag
You’re doing amazing, no touch-up required.

7. Every feeding option
Stick to what you’ll actually use—whether bottle, breast, or both.

8. Baby shoes
Cute but unnecessary. Socks or booties are easier for newborns.

9. Your laptop + tablet + planner
Unless it’s a work outing, leave the tech overload behind.

10. Every backup mask, sanitizer, and wipe pack
One travel pack of each is enough for most outings.

What You Actually Need (For Most Outings Under 2 Hours):

  • 2-3 diapers

  • Travel wipes

  • Changing pad

  • One extra outfit (zip-up is easiest)

  • Burp cloth or bib

  • Feeding supplies (bottle or nursing cover)

  • Pacifier (1-2 max)

  • Small toy or teether

  • Your essentials: wallet, phone, keys

  • A bag that opens wide, stays upright, and keeps you calm

Tip: Look for a diaper bag that uses smart layout over excessive pockets. (Like our La Madison—three intuitive zones mean less digging, more doing.)

Final Thought:

Packing isn’t about carrying more. It’s about carrying smarter.

If your bag helps you see everything at a glance, move quicker, and feel calmer—you’ve already won.
